TRITON OFFSHORE

Richard’s story

Richard Jansen is a nature enthusiast, father of two daughters, and co-founder of Triton Offshore. His motivations, dreams, and challenges in offshore decommissioning? You’ll discover them in this article. ‘It’s never the same old, same old!’

The path to offshore decommissioning

Richard has a background in mechanical engineering, which led him to CAD engineering, offshore decommissioning—and Jorit Focke.
Richard: ‘After years in heavy marine transport projects, I came upon my first offshore decommissioning project for Boskalis in 2016. I was immediately hooked. The complexity of it fascinated (and still fascinates) me.

Every project is completely different; it’s never the same old, same old! When I met Jorit during one such project in 2018, we hit it off right away. He has the same fascination and inspired me with his stories about the possibilities of entrepreneurship.’

In 2019, Richard and Jorit took the leap: together with Nils Izelaar, they started their own company in decommissioning offshore structures. Triton Offshore was born.

The differences between a blueprint from the eighties and the platform you actually encounter at sea, and then coming up with thoughtful solutions to dismantle it safely and efficiently—it’s just fantastic.

Raising the bar

Richard, Jorit, and Nils love working as a team, and that goes for their freelancers too. Richard explains: ‘Always being there for each other, being open to each other’s ideas, openly sharing knowledge, and being yourself—that’s what we value most. So we only work with freelancers who share the same mindset. It leads to great collaborations where we all learn from each other, and it keeps our quality high.’

Triton Offshore’s motto? Raising the bar. For Richard, the meaning of that is crystal clear. ‘Taking that extra step. By pulling out all the stops to meet a client’s tight deadline, to name an example. But also by making our drawings, calculations, and prototype constructions as clear and simple as possible for everyone who will be working with them, especially onboard the ship.’

Why make things more complicated than they need to be, right? Keep it simple!

Motivations, dreams, and challenges

Of course, Richard has dreams and challenges in offshore decommissioning. They are closely tied to his motivations. ‘With Triton Offshore, we want to bring engineering, CAD, and software development together in one efficient solution. We’ve already done this with the L7-project for HEBO, and it proved to be a success.

Now it’s time for our next dream: to take on an offshore project from the bidding phase to practical execution, with our own team and equipment. To make this dream a reality, we’re currently taking serious steps. Steps that perfectly align with the challenge in this industry:

The large number of platforms still waiting at sea for decommissioning and the lack of crane vessels and support vessels to carry it out. Our contribution to solving this will be ready for lift-off soon. Stay tuned!

Jorit’s story

Jorit Focke is the father of fraternal twins, loves his RIB-boat Moby Dick and wife, and is the co-founder of Triton Offshore. What drives him to develop intelligent software for offshore decommissioning and wind parks? And, what makes him so proud of Triton Offshore’s creation, Riggum? Read all about it in this article.

Jorit is a cheerful guy who thinks and speaks quickly. In his career as a Software Engineer, he developed many software tools for various employers in offshore engineering. Eventually, he focused on offshore wind and decommissioning as a freelancer. After 6 years of working independently, he met Richard at Boskalis, and it wasn’t long before they decided to join forces. That was the start of Triton Offshore.

Decom is alive
It’s variety that attracts Jorit to offshore decommissioning.
Jorit: ‘Decom is alive! What you find at sea is rarely the same as the drawing in your hands. Since each situation requires a different approach and the end product will be scrapped, I regularly get the chance to try new tools. I love that.’

Born out of a love for lifting and software
Richard and Jorit developed a Triton Offshore-original software tool: Riggum. Born out of a love for lifting and software, he orates.

‘Too often, when creating a lift plan, you have to struggle with a homemade Excel sheet and a basic program without parameters. I figured: how great would it be, if there existed a solid application for this?’

Enter Riggum: an intelligent CAD tool within our Hoistmaster software suite, based on Inventor. You input project data such as the centre of gravity, lift points, the weight of the object, and your available rigging. Riggum then configurates a complete lift plan in the form of a  . It includes calculations and a material list, with everything modifiable in real-time at any moment.

Perfectly straight lifts, time after time
Riggum is a Triton Offshore original, and Jorit’s pride and joy.
He laughs: ‘Seeing Riggum prove itself in the market was my dream project. This tool saves our clients a lot of time and significantly reduces error margins. Plus, the 3D-model is much more accurate and closer to reality than the standard drawings most programs generate. It eliminates assumptions, such as the length of a sling through a hook. The result? Perfectly straight lifts, time after time. That makes me proud!’
